Step by step

7 steps

  1. 1

Make a starting chain (multiple of 2, plus 1)

    Chain a length that equals (2 × number of stars) + 1. Example: 22 × 2 + 1 = 45 ch. Remember: every pair of chains = one Star.

  2. 2

Start the first Star: insert in 2nd ch from hook and pull up a loop

Insert your hook into the 2nd chain from the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. This is fiddly because you’re working into the foundation chain, but it’s only for this row.

  3. 3

Pull up loops in the next four chains (to total six loops)

Insert the hook and pull up a loop in each of the next 4 chains. After these plus the first loop you started with, you should have six loops on the hook.

  4. 4

Yarn over, pull through all loops and ch1 to form the star eye

Yarn over and pull through all six loops on the hook, then work 1 ch to close the star’s eyelet. This completes the bottom half of your first Star.

  5. 5

Make the next Star by pulling loops into the previous eye and spokes

Insert the hook into the eye of the previous star and pull up a loop, then insert into the spoke(s) and the next chain positions so you gather six loops again. Yarn over, pull through all loops and ch1 to close the new star.

  6. 6

Finish Row 1: hdc in final chain and turn

When you reach the last chain, after your final Star work 1 hdc in that final chain (needed for edge support). Turn your work to begin the second row.

  7. 7

Row 2 (top half): ch2, 2 hdc in each eye, then 1 hdc in the skipped chain

Ch2 (counts as first hdc). Work 2 hdc into the eyelet of each Star across the row. At the end, work 1 hdc into the top of the chain you skipped when starting the row. Option: cut and change color with a ss and ch3, or ch3 and continue in the same color to begin the next row of Star stitches.
